Germany

Germany might not be top of the list when thinking of holiday destinations although they rank as the 7th most visited country in the world and arguably have the best beer makers in the world (and the third largest consumers of beer per person of any country behind only Czech Republic and Austria). Their ‘Reinheitsgebot’ (or German Beer Purity Laws’) are a very strict set of rules laid down in german law during the 15th century dictating the production processes and allowing only four ingredients to be used (water, barley, hops and yeast).
There are also some truly breathtaking areas of Germany to visit for some wonderful scenery. Head south to Bavaria to experience the German Alps, Munich (home of the world famous Oktoberfest beer festival), and some gorgeously picturesque medieval towns and villages, and some breathtakingly beautiful castles such as the romantic looking ‘Neuschwanstein Castle’ built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the 19th century (famously used as the inspiration for Walt Disney’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ castle). For wine lover’s you could head to the River Mosel area where Germany’s oldest vineyards were planted by the Romans about 2,000 years ago, and the unique micro-climate produces some of the best wines in the world including some sublime rieslings.  Visit any German town or city during the month of December (wrap up well!) and join in the celebration and fun to be had in the most wonderful Christmas markets… get swept up in the atmosphere (and try the warmed spicy local wine known as ‘gluhwein’)
