One of the oldest civilisations on earth Ancient Greece is considered the cradle of Western Civilisation, and is the birthplace of democracy, philosophy, and the Olympic Games. With 80% of the country being mountainous, its highest peak is Mount Olympus at 2,918 metres (and according to Greek mythology the home of the Greek Gods).
Lying at the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula, Greece is surrounded by the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Cretan Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. It has some 6,000 islands (including around 200 which are uninhabited) giving it one of the longest coastlines of any country, and making it one of the greatest ever maritime nations. With so many of the best loved islands in the Mediterranean you will be hard spoilt to choose where to start… Zakynthos is the best for beaches while Corfu is fabulous for families. Mykonos has some wonderful boutique hotels, while Crete has arguably the best food, and Kefalonia (the setting for Louis de Bernieres’ classic novel ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’) the best for wine. The choice is endless.
