From the ancient port city of Ephesus (Efes) to the soaring Byzantine dome of Aya Sofya, Turkey has more than its fair share of world-famous ruins and monuments. A succession of historical figures and empires – including the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans – have all left their mark on this former stopover along the Silk Road. Experiencing their legacy takes you from the closeted quarters of the sultan and his harem in İstanbul’s sprawling Topkapı Palace to the romantic and mysterious Lycian ruins on Mediterranean beaches.

Itinerary

Day 1SINGAPORE - ISTANBUL

Arrive into cosmopolitan Istanbul, the city straddling two continents. You are met on arrival and transferred to your hotel located in Sultanahmet just steps from the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace. Rest of the day to settle in.

Day 2PRIVATE ISTANBUL HIGHLIGHTS

Start by visiting the most important landmarks of the old city including the beautiful Aya Sofia and its well preserved Byzantine mosaics and frescoes and the strategically positioned 15th Century Topkapi Palace, medieval home of the Ottoman sultans, which overlooks the waters of the Bosphorus on one side and the Golden Horn on the other.
Continue to the Basilica Cistern, the largest of several hundred that lie beneath the city. After lunch visit the old City Walls, the Byzantine Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora and, if time permits, the historic Pera District

Day 3PRIVATE BOSPHORUS & TWO CONTINENTS & KADIKOY TOUR

Meet the guide in the hotel’s lobby for the Full Day Bosphorus Cruise Tour.

The tour covers a ride by bus to the Golden Horn, one of Istanbul’s harbours that have played a major role in the city’s development. A visit to the Spice Bazaar, also known as the Egyptian Bazaar, in which you get to enjoy the enticing aromas of an endless array of herbs and spices. A Bosphorus Cruise by boat, alongside the waterway separating the European and the Asian sides of Istanbul, with all the historical and architectural spread along the way. A visit to Dolmabahce Palace and the Royal Garden of the Dolmabahce Palace. A visit to Camlica Hill, Istanbul’s highest hill. And, Kadikoy.

Day 4CANAKKALE - IZMIR

Be dazzled by the archaeological delights on offer today. The scenic road takes you to Assos where the city’s ancient walls are amongst the best preserved in Turkey. Visit the Temple of Athena before continuing through olive groves, flat plains, past pebbly Aegean beaches and fertile agricultural land to the ancient ruins of Pergamum, which rose to prominence in the 2nd Century BC. See the Asclepeion, the theatre and temple remains

Day 5IZMIR - EPHESUS - IZMIR

This morning, explore the important site of Ephesus, the best-preserved classical city in the Eastern Mediterranean. Walk in the footsteps of the ancients along the Roman Way and Marble Street. A&K also arranges access to the Terrace Houses excavation to see the beautiful mosaic floors and frescoed walls, followed by the museum and the Temple of Artemis .

Day 6IZMIR - KAYSERI ( FLIGHT)

Fly to Kayseri in central Turkey to access Goreme, a picturesque town in Cappadocia famous for its ‘Fairy Chimneys’, the pinnacle shaped monoliths, and underground cities. See the extraordinary rock-carved Byzantine churches, now an open-air museum, famous for their painted frescoes.

Day 7CAPPADOCIA

Once heart of the ancient Hittite Empire and later a strategic point on the Silk Road, Cappadocia has an incredible historical heritage so plan the day to suit. Explore the underground city of Kaymakli with its network of rock-carved tunnels used as subterranean hideouts followed by a visit to a potter’s workshop and the Goreme Rug Weavers Association. Optionally this afternoon take a hike along the Red Valley.

Option to extend: 4 Days in Bodrum
Depart Cappadocia to catch your flight to Bodrum, located in the Turkish Riviera. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel, Mandarin Oriental Bodrum, conveniently located by the beach.
You will have three days to enjoy the beautiful beaches and turquoise waters of the Turkish Riviera. The city is also home to numerous superb remnants of ancient times which are not to be missed.

Day 8KAYSERI - ISTANBUL

Fly back to Istanbul and to your hotel. This afternoon explore the Dolmabahce Palace, with an option of cruising along the mighty Bosphorus, a 30km stretch of water flowing through the city (not included)

Day 9ISTANBUL

Savour the sights and smells of the Spice Market where you are encouraged to taste the local delicacies. Then try your hand at bargaining in one of the 3000 shops in the labyrinthine Grand Bazaar. Later visit the glorious Rustem Pasha Mosque, an architectural delight from the Ottoman era.
Afternoon at leisure.
